Thank you for your interest in Scouts at Murrumbateman.
For a small community, we offer a BIG range of personal development opportunities for local youth.
We run three age-based program units, aligned to the sections of the Scouts Australia program. These are:
- Cubs Scouts (8 - 11 years)
- Scouts (11 - 14 years)
- Venturer Scouts (14 - 18 years)
As well as the week night meetings at the local hall during ACT school terms, there are some week night activities that are conducted away from Murrumbateman from time-to-time (such as bowling at Belconnen, rock climbing at Mitchell). All activities are shown in the unit term program. Weekend activities are also conducted at various places in southern NSW and ACT, and for the older youth members, elsewhere in NSW. There are also national and international Scouting activities that Scouts and Venturers can attend (such as the Scouts NSW Cuboree, Australian Jamboree, and World Jamboree).
We would love to share the Scouting experience with your young person. If Scouts looks like something your child would like to try then you are welcome to come along for a four-week trial period with the relevant age-based unit. It does take a few weeks to start understanding the Scouts customs and practices. Before the end of that trial period, if you are happy for your child to stay involved in Scouts we can confirm their membership of Scouts NSW.
Upon full membership, the only compulsory item of uniform which you will need to purchase is the relevant section shirt. The scarf, woggle and badges are all provided by the Group at the investiture ceremony. Of course, participation in outdoor activities may also require you to obtain other items of clothing and equipment, such as suitable clothing for the climate, hiking boots, sleeping bag, backpack, cooking equipment, and tent.
Fees are generally charged for each six-month (two school term) membership period (called a 'Trek') . Separate fees are charged by Scouts Australia (NSW Branch) and by the 1st Murrumbateman Scout Group, but are paid in one transaction. Details of the Scouts NSW fees structure are available at: https://www.scoutsnsw.com.au/info-for-parents/membership. In addition to the Scouts NSW fee, the Group Fee is currently set at $100 per six-month Trek.
Scouts NSW has decided to make Trek2 2024 for a 9 month period (term 3 and 4 in 2024 and term 1 for 2025), therefore the fees this time around are reflected in that (Group fees will be $150 for the 9 month period)
Additional charges are levied for various activities, such as a bowling night in Canberra, weekend camps, Cuborees (about 5 days long), or the Australian Jamboree (about 12 days long). Activity fees depend on the duration, location, and nature of the activity.
Please keep in mind that a Scout group can only operate effectively with the active involvement of parents and other interested adult members of the community. In fact, scouting activities are more rewarding and beneficial for our youth members when their parents are involved. We therefore ask that you commit to supporting the Group.
We look forward to discussing the Scouts Australia program, and the 1st Murrumbateman Scout Group, with you further.
